Sometimes, it's easy to fall into a trap when we do not know exactly what we are looking for. But, as parents, we are more inclined to open our minds to become better. Once we look at health through a different lens -- the kind of lens that draws us or brings us back to the basics— it then allows our mind to become more aware of what is in front of us.
Embracing the “greener” side of life (looking out for our family’s well-being and our environment) might just bring more quality to our family values now, more than ever.
Here, we'll be featuring the gist of the inner workings of EWG.
Since the nonprofit community group has been founded in 1994 in the US, most of its research is also done within their area of scope. However, their database will show us relatable information in certain categories such as ingredients of all types, shopper’s guide in buying produce (veggies and fruits), meat and dairy product labels, food scores, as well as dissection of what’s behind in the cosmetics sector.
Since Read the Label, Inc. is in the cosmetics industry, we go directly to their SKINDEEP database. Under Skindeep, their product and ingredient classification cover general groups such as skin or fragrance, down to the specific ones such as baby product lines.
They give ratings to cosmetic ingredients and their ratings are color-coded or ranked from 1-10. 1-2 (Green) - safe
3-6 (Yellow) - moderately toxic (depending on dosage & its ratio to the overall formulation)
7-10 (Red) - harmful
Through this guide, our company, Read the Label, Inc., always sees to it that we are consistently under the green rating.
For every individually-researched ingredient under Skindeep, some sub-categories provide more information such as:
✔ Ingredient functions or how the ingredient works
✔ Short description about the ingredient
✔ Effects on internal organs
✔ Toxicity levels
✔ Effects on the environment (bioaccumulation, etc.)
EWG also displays a colored meter chart where you can see how the ingredient affects (best to worst) specific areas of concern: developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergies and immunotoxicity.
The list of ingredients is endless, and EWG doesn’t quite fall short of any. Just remember, when you check labels, the shorter the list or the lesser the number of ingredients involved, the easier it is for you to do your research. And another good news: less ingredients means the product has been carefully and safely formulated -- not a labyrinth composition of sorts!
It may be quite a stretch when we research from time to time, but when we stumble upon the right information, making the right choice is also at our disposal.
As a company, we have a deep-seated pursuit in creating products that promote well-being right from birth. We give high regard to newborn caring because it has become the company’s mission from day one. That is why we do our research outside the box, check different sources, look into ingredients, ask our chemists’ advice, and we also keep learning so we can advocate and contribute to a more healthy society.
